How to describe an orange.

My challenge to myself today: Describe an orange in written words. So I go; it is round, it is orange in color (duh!), its skin is like… it is like… rough… like a person with acne scars… pock marked? Er… er… the inside of the fruit is er… squishy???

And then I saw this online description: The fruit is globose, subglobose, oblate or somewhat oval, 2 1/2 to 3 3/4 in (6.5-9.5 cm) wide. Dotted with minute glands containing an essential oil, the outer rind (epicarp) is orange or yellow when ripe, the inner rind (mesocarp) is white, spongy and non-aromatic. The pulp (endocarp), yellow, orange or more or less red, consists of tightly packed membranous juice sacs enclosed in 10 to 14 wedge-shaped compartments which are readily separated as individual segments…

and this:
The orange fruit is orange in color, and it looks like a globe. The shape of the fruit is scientifically described as globus. The rind of orange is thick and the fruit has to be eaten by peeling of the rind. It is a citrus fruit and has a tangy taste.Nearly 60 percent of the oranges produced are made into orange juice and supplied all over the country.

The orange fruit varies in sizes, and a healthy fruit should fill your palm. When you peel the rind off the fruit, you will notice segments of the orange similar to garlic gloves but they are big and juicy. The orange may also have white thread like things covering it. These also need to be removed gently before eating the fruit. There are tiny seeds inside each segment of the orange. The remaining part of the segment is filled with pulp and water.

“It took a long time for me to be able to even say to myself that I was gay. I couldn’t even go to a gay bar. I used to write down on a piece of paper ‘I’m gay,’ then scribble it out and throw it in the bin.” —Andrew Haigh, director of “Weekend”
